Field names and numbers

Since formulas refer to fields by numbers only, and the view shows field names only, is there a reasonably easy way to export a list that shows what field name corresponds to each field number? Or is the only choice available to laboriously check the properties of each field to see what its field number is?

I'm having a devil of a time getting my DB to calculate correctly and not being able to easily see by name, or number, what field is being used where is getting frustrating.

Hi,

Thanks for posting.

You would need to manually note the field names being used, since only field numbers are referred to within the formula.

What problems are you encountering with your calculations?

I have several conditional fields where I'm copying the value of a field from the previous record if the IF result is negative, and from a different field in the same record if the IF result is positive. I then use that value in a subsequent field calculation. I'm also trying to keep the field order in a sequence that makes it easy to view the data I'm interested in looking at on a regular basis. I.e., F20 may check F5 and use P10 and F21 for an IF result. I may like to have F20 and F21 next to each in the all fields list view, but F21 has to be to the left of F20 for F20 to calculate correctly. At this point I have the fields in somewhat of a mumbo jumbo order left to right trying to get them to be referred to and used in the proper calculation sequence. When I look at the formula I can't tell right off hand which fields are involved in the calculation. And the DB not recalculating every time I reorder the fields adds to the confusion.

This is a vehicle maintenance DB where I like to keep track of a running 4 fill MPG average. But the records also include oil changes and other actions. For the non-gas records the pertinent odometer numbers need to be carried forward based on IF results. It's been months since I first moved this DB over from Smartlist to Go, and it has never been right. It's obvious I have some field order problems, and not being able to easily correlate the field number with the field name is frustrating.

There appears to be no way to separate the field order for viewing from the field order for calculating, right?

You can arrange the order of fields visually using a custom view. This affects the sequence of the fields when applied but does not change the physical order of the fields as they are listed in the Database Properties / Fields section, which is what is read by the calculated field formula editor.

To arrange fields in a custom view, try the following:

- while viewing the list of records, tap the view selector at the bottom of the screen
- when the popup appears, tap the option to edit views
- on the next screen, click the + button to create a new view
- from the next set of options, select the field order option and arrange the fields by holding and dragging on the three bars to the right of the name
