Issues implementing many to many relationships

I have been unable to figure out how to implement a useful many to many relationship. Let me say I have looked at all the tutorials (most are not helpful because they focus on other product versions) as well as searching the forums for answers, but have been unable to come up with a solution.

I have a database comprised of tables structured as follows (I am going to call them tables instead of databases since the database is not complete without all of the various tables).
Stories table with one to many relationship (via link/linked) with Scenes, Characters, and Locations tables.
For any scene, I can select it's location using a DBlookup field
I have implemented that structure without any issues, everything works as expected.
Now, I could have a scene with many characters, and a character could be in many scenes?
I gather that somehow I can do this via the Relationship type field, but I cannot figure out how.
Keep in mind, my scenes and characters may already exist. So, if I am in a scene, I want to be able to link to existing characters (picking them from a list), or create a new one.
And, for each character, I want to be able to see the scenes that character is in (I could live without needing to create a new scene from a character).

I'm familiar with standard database terminology if that helps explain what I need to do. For instance, in a standard database environment I'd create the many-many relationship via a linking table. But I'm unsure how to do that in this environment.

Thanks in advance to any who offer up a solution.
