Desktop Connect sync problem: not detecting wifi network

Postby aok » Tue Sep 12, 2017 10:33 pm

Hi. I am trying to sync to my Mac using Desktop Connect and I get the error:

"Error: To Use This Feature You must Connect to a WiFi Network"

My WiFi is working. This is the first time this has happened.

I powered my iPhone down and restarted it, but still get the error.

Hi there,

Very sorry to hear of the problem. Could you check something for me?

- Go to Settings app
- Go to wifi
- Tap the 'i' button next to the wifi that you're currently connected on.
- Take a screenshot and attach or just tell me the values on this screen. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for sending this- all looks normal there. Can you also check the Settings, General, VPN section and make sure you are not using a VPN on your device? If you're not, can you send me a screenshot of the Desktop Connect screen after you press the sync button? I wanted to see the exact error message so I can do some googling as I'm at a loss!

From the looks of his icon bar on top, VPN is on.

He also has Do Not Disturb active, but that is not supposed to affect the phone when unlocked, only when locked. Stranger things have happened.

One thing I find different is that his VPN indicator is on the opposite side of the icon bar from mine, running the same iOS version on the same phone network. It could be that he has a smaller iPhone screen than my iPhone 7 Plus.

Just my observations :D

Actually, yes, when I installed "My Data Manager" the VPN icon appeared. I assume it is something this app uses. I don't need it otherwise. So I just deleted the app and now my sync worked. Problem solved!

And yes, curtterp, I have an iPhone SE! :)

Thanks for the help!

That's great news! Glad it was a simple fix and something I'll be able to keep an eye out for in the future.

I think that My Data Manager creates a VPN tunnel in order to track the data usage. That is the only reason way that app would create a VPN tunnel.

We use Box at work to allow data to be available to our personal devices. It is the only solution that is allowed. When I open Box, the VPN tunnel is created while I am working on data, then when I go away from Box the VPN goes away.

Glad that the problem was a simple one.
