Lost database after iPhone restore

Hi there,
Had to restore my iPhone3Gs after my son set a passcode on it that I couldn't unlock. Got back my software, music, text messages and some of my Handbase databases but my main activity database which I foolishly haven't separately backed up in far too long is completely missing. I can't work out why this one database should be missing. Is there any way I can find old copies of the file in my iPhone backup data or somewhere?
very grateful for any help!!

Hi there,

Sorry to hear of your recent headaches. I'm sure this whole debacle must be incredibly frustrating. Maybe some of us with young kids will learn from this experience to passcode lock our devices before someone else gets hold of them ;)

The iPhone backups should contain the PDB files, but it's a big compressed file and iTunes does not provide a way to randomnly search for specific files. Assuming you didn't have the encryption option for the backups turned on (it's off by default) you can get to those files using a third party tool:

http://www.iphonebackupextractor.com/

I've used this in the past and recommended to customers as well and it's worked great as long as they didn't have encryption enabled. Take a look and see if you can locate and restore the files!

Where are these files kept?

The backup extractor should be able to locate these files, but I believe they are here:

Mac:
/Users/username/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup

PC:
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Apple Computer\SyncServices\Local

where username is your device name.

Hello,

Could you specify what database are missing? As long as you you've done backup before, I don't see why you can't recover data back to your iPhone. Maybe you are using the wrong software. Have you tried FonePaw iPhone Data Recovery software?

Anyway, good luck!

Here are tips and steps about how to extract iPhone backup via iTunes.
Don’t sync iPhone with iTunes first if you want to restore your iPhone. Because iTunes only updates the backup file every time you sync with it, not to build a new backup file.
Connect your iPhone to the computer and launch iTunes
Right-Click on the iPhone and select “Restore from Backup”
Choose the appropriate backup you want to restore
Click ‘Restore’ to start the process to recover from that backup
If you don't success, you can try to use iPhone Data Recovery or other tool.

Can I use iTunes to extract each individually?

Edit: finally recover iPhone data with the tutorial.

iTunes can't extract from the backups, you would need a third party app for that purpose.

We recommend the app available at http://www.iphonebackupextractor.com
