Selecting options from menu in field 2 based of what was sel

Postby penzput » Mon Feb 25, 2013 6:04 pm

I’d like to be able to select sub category based on what main category was selected.
Is this possible?

Example:

Goals DB
Field: Goal
Record example --------------------
Health
Finances
Home

Goal Categories DB
Field: Goal (from Goals DB)
Field: Category
Record examples --------------------
Health ---- Walking
Health ---- Eating right
Finances ---- Stock trading
Finances ---- Working OT

Goal Tracking DB
Field: Goal (from Goal Categories DB)
Field: Category (filtered down to just categories associated w/goal selected in Goal field)
Task:
Date:
Record examples --------------------
Health ---- Walking ---- walked for ½ hour ---- 2/2/13

So on the Goal Tracking DB, I’d like to add a new record. The Goal field options will come from the Goals database.
When I go to fill in the Category field, it will be a popup showing just the categories associated with the Goal I just selected in the Goal field, coming from the Goal Categories DB.
Is this possible?
If so how?
Are there any tutorials on doing this?
Seems like a common request but I haven’t been able to get it to work on my own or find a solution list in Knowledge Base or Forum.

Appreciate any help,
Penelope

Hi there,

Thanks for your question. There is NOT currently a way to do this with separate fields. You can however, have a single popup field with sub values. So you can have a category that lists:

Health
---- Walking
---- Eating right
Finances
---- Stock trading
---- Working OT

And in this way it's all stored under a single field. Sometimes customers want a way to show the path to the last item since a value may not be specific to only one top level item. In this case I recommend putting the parent category in the name of the sub item. Like this:

Health
Health - Walking
Health - Eating right
Finances
Finances - Stock trading
Finances - Working OT

This is the only way we have to accomplish this right now- hope it meets your needs!
