I would like to send a text message instead of calling. How can this be done?

Thanks. Julie

Hi,

I've added a file that illustrates how this can be done using a combination of external fields that add your phone number to the "sms://" header and turns it into an active link that when the SMS label is pressed, you will be taken to the messaging app with an outgoing message to the number created.

Save the file to your computer and change the extension from .zip to .pdb

Then install the file on your iPhone and take a look at the field structure in Database Properties.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Brian,

I tried your tutorial, works well. I am using it in a couple of databases.

However I have one that I regularly import from another, desktop, database. The numbers are still formatted using parentheses around the area code, thus
(503) 823-3700

So that instead of getting sms://503-823-3700 I get Sms://(503) 823-3700
This does not function, I ended adding a copy button and having my end users manually start their texting app and paste the number into the app. The app accepts (503) 823-3700 just fine. This turned out to b a blessing in disguise as a couple of my endusers are on the android platform and the copy and paste works for them while the sms dial feature does not.

Good point about the formatting, Patrick. Glad that it is working for you!
