Link/relationship

Postby grputnam » Wed Nov 04, 2009 2:44 pm

I have linked two data bases together. It is working. However it seems that only one field is able to go from the parent data base to the child data base. I would would like the first name and some other information to go from the parent data base to the child data base. Is it possible and how do I do it?
Thanks,
Gordon

Hi Gordon,

It is possible using the relationship field! Here's what you do:

Add a field to the child database that is of the relationship type.
Point to the linked field in the child database and the link field in the parent database. Those two are your key fields, so you can then choose which field to show in this database from the parent database. You can add as many of these as you want!

Hope this helps.

Sorry but I must not be understanding. Here is what I did.
In the child data base I have linked the Last Name to the parent data base. That has worked.
In the child data base I have relationship for the First Name.
In the edit field Dialogue box:
Related Fiel in this database: Last Name
Other database name: parent name
Other field name: Last Name
Show from other datatbase: First Name

thanks,
Gordon

Grant,

I can't tell for sure because I don't know what field types you have, but from the looks of it, you have:
Other field name: Last Name

I'm assuming that is not the link field. YOu need to point the linked field to the link field. The Last name shown in the Linked field is not actually it's value, it has an internal field that matches the link field to make the pair related. So make sure your relationship points your linked field to your link field and you can then grab whatever other value in the show value from section!

Ok,
Let me try again because I still am confused. Thanks for your patients.

The parent database:
Last Name (Text)
There a number of fields
Visits (this is the name of the child database) (Link)
First Name (Text)

In the child data base I want to bring over both the last and first names from the parent database. The last name comes over but the first name does not.
The fields go like this:
Last Name (Linked)
In the edit field I have the Other Database name (parent database)
Other field (Visits)
There are then a number of fields
First Name (Relationship)
In the edit field Dialogue box:
Related Field in this database: Last Name
Other database name: parent name
Other field name: Last Name
Show from other database: First Name
Thank you,
Gordon

From what you're saying, your relationship field is not pairing the link to the linked field. In particular:

Your relatonship field called first name needs to point to the link field in the parent database, which you wrote as:
Visits (this is the name of the child database) (Link)

So change it to this!
