Performance issues with IPAQ214

am just changing to an IPAQ 214 (from Palm) and Enterprise version (from Palm Professional/Windows desktop versions) and am devastated to find how slow things can be. I use multiple forms with many buttons using "append caption to value" and touching any one of these buttons can cause a delay of nearly 30 seconds before I see the content appear in the relevant text box - during which time I can't do anything but wait.
If I clear all running programs from the IPAQ memory, it sometimes works without any delays, but the only surefire way is to do a soft reset on the IPAQ immediately before I use HandDBase. I have erased all additional software except for an eBook reader, but installed software doesn't seem to be the problem.
I assume this is a memory issue - any advice on how to handle it? Any guidance on keeping apps as efficient as possible (am currently using an app that I had running on a Tablet PC under Windows desktop - it's a bit big for the screen and have scaled down some of the forms, but plan to revise the whole app shortly.
IPAQ has 121MB memory with over 80MB program memory available, under Windows Mobile 6 Classic

thanks
Doug

Hi Doug,

Thanks for your posting. Typically HanDBase on a Windows Mobile runs as fast or faster than the Palm OS handhelds you are used to. The one exception is the HP 21x series of Handhelds. We have had numerous reports of poor performance there. I'm frankly not sure why that is, but it would seem there is something we are doing that takes far longer on that device than any other. Would you be willing to try some test versions out to see if I can find a solution to this? Let me know!

Thanks Dave,
I would certainly be very prepared to do some testing/whatever it takes. Having invested in the IPAQ 214 (partly as a result of your recommendation!), I'm keen to explore it as much as I can as there does not currently appear to be anything in the same type of league, so go ahead and send me whatever you think may help (my background is software support and helping to diagnose issues like this used to be quite common!)

Are you suggesting that the IPAQ 1nn range works without issues (I might consider going that route temporarily until my issues are resolved/worked around)?

Please email me whatever you want

Doug

I can't agree with the statement that HDB runs as fast or faster on WM than on Palm - NOTHING runs as fast or faster on Windoze Mobile! In an old thread (on I think the old forum) one writer aptly described the WM experience as "tap and wait".

IMO, that is very true when you're running multiple apps. I have a Dell Axim x50v that I use for testing mainly and run only HanDBase on it. For most things, it's far faster than any Palm OS device barring the Tungsten C (which was like lightning with almost everything).

The only thing that will consistently be faster on Palm OS for HanDBase is opening a database. That's because it's a native file format for Palm, and doesn't have to be read in it's entirety before opening.

I think as with all things it very much depends on the device. For example, on the iPhone, the original and 3G variety have annoying delays as you do things throughout the device, but the 3GS is almost instantaneous with anything it does.

Dave, did you want me to try anything/test anything try to see where this problem may be? I'm testing some new ideas for an update to a current app and it's a good time to incorporate any suggestions you may have. I will be looking to see if this relates to (a) large number of fields (close to max) or (b) multiple forms or (c) large numbers of action buttons (definitely a Windows desktop issue with low RAM)
Thanks
Doug

Hi Doug,

If you wouldn't mind, a great place to start is checking to see if the speed issue maintains if you have no forms set up. By turning off the start form for the database, it will effectively disable them all and you can see if the same issues occur.

Do they also occur throughout the program, or only while editing within forms?
