Deserted house?/

Dave, Brian, Samuel,

When I discovered that the website was down on Monday an Tuesday, I was filled with a sense of foreboding, even panic. It was a bit like visiting a childhood home and finding it empty, with the doors locked. I scuttled around old haunts to see if there were any signs of life. On Twitter there were a couple of moth-eaten tweets from a few years ago. The app store had some old and rather negative reviews, written by people who were not fit to buy the app in the first place. I even held my nose and visited Facebook, but there the offerings were also stale and out of date.
Now all these reviews could not have been written by your rivals, for Handbase has none. I came to that conclusion after many fruitless searches for a substitute, both recently and in the past.
Reading the forum posts, and even contributing from time to time, it is clear to me that HB has a loyal user base, many of whom want to keep the show on the road. Suggestions have been many, financial donations too, even from me, but all seemingly to no avail.Nothing visible seems to be happening, and this disciple is getting worried.
I know the background story, and have every sympathy with your need to put bread on the tables etc., but inertia will ultimately lead to extinction.
Existing users bring no income, and inactivity will bring no new blood.
No matter which of the suggestions decide to follow, there will always be people who disagree with your choice; the important thing is to do something, and to be seen to be doing it.

Finally, there are many worthy projects which are maintained by groups of enthusiasts, old railways, stately homes and suchlike; perhaps a new business structure might be the way forward.

I hope you do not see the above as an impudent intrusion into the affairs of what is after all a private company. That is not my aim.

Hi there,

Thanks for writing! I am wondering what you found with regards to website problems the previous days before you wrote this. You see, I have been working for over 12 months on rewriting the website's backend to support newer versions of PHP. The site needed to be upgraded to newer versions for security upgrades to be done which allowed for TLS 1.2 ( a more secure certificate that required a newer server than what DDH has been running on for the better part of the last decade). So I worked on and off over the last year on that upgrade and this weekend was when I pulled the trigger on switching to make the new site active. From my end everything worked instantly and I haven't had any problems reported. That doesn't mean there weren't any - just that they weren't reported! So please let me know what you saw and if you're still having troubles so I can address them asap.

Regarding the status of HanDBase and the future, I hear you and agree to some degree. I have only a little time each week to work on coding outside my day job and unfortunately have spent too much of that time on the website itself the last few months. Hoping I will be able to put that same effort into the apps themselves in the coming months.

I can't say that things will ever be the way they were when there was a staff of nearly a dozen working here, but I have been still plugging away as I can, and as I mentioned on a different post, I have been teaching a new helper, my Computer Science majoring son, Samuel to get involved with the hopes that longer term his role can grow as well. So hopefully you'll see some more movement than you have recently, and a few more risks being taken as well, which are needed if we are going to try to grow and thrive in the coming years!

Thanks for your thoughts and continued dedication. I welcome your input always!

A couple of weeks ago, there were a couple of times of too many sql connections. Those errors did not last very long.

Tuesday, there was an error that I don't remember exactly, but it was like it couple not find the forum. It was close to get ready for work time, so I didn't think about taking a screenshot and letting you know. It was working that night.

I think that Samuel needs to introduce himself to the forum. :D. Will he be helping you on HanDBase?

Have a good weekend
Have a good day

Curt
I am not a DDHSoftware employee, just a long time HanDBase user.... from Palm to Windows Mobile to Android, to iOS. Thanks to DDH, the database files transferred to each platform without a problem.
