HanDBase - Clarification on automatically merge/sync data.

Postby Zinc Oianoid » Mon Aug 05, 2013 12:51 am

Q:
Are the stages in the proper order of execution?
How accurate are my statements?
Is there a faster way?

Assumptions:
We have all the needed software.
User Account set up on PC.

Specs:
Windows 7
HDB 4+ on Android

Stage 1: Sync HDB to PC.

Click sync icon on Android HDB.
Enter resulting URL into browser ( IE 10 )
note on pda "Index File Sent" message.

1. On PC, launch HDB pgm.
2. Go to Configure/Sync and choose Android User.
3. Click Synchronize.
4. Check that Wifi IP Address is entered in box exactly as it is shown on pda.
5. Click Next.

If done properly you should see data files syncing.

Key points:
PDA must be in "Desktop Connect" mode.
URL must have been loaded recently or refreshed (F5).
No HDB file open on PC.

Syncing is NOT real time. Change what you want on PDA/PC and then follow the steps above.

Stage 2: Multi User - pending

Stage 3: Sync to non-HDB ( in this case Access ) - pending

Hi there,

Thanks for your post. You don't need to go to your browser to do a sync, you should be able to omit these steps:

Enter resulting URL into browser ( IE 10 )
note on pda "Index File Sent" message.

The web browser part is if you don't have the conduit and want to manually back up or install databases from the desktop.

Otherwise you seem to have it all correct!

TP = tab pro, android
GN = galaxy note2, android
WE = workexpense.pdb

shared WE from TP to GN.
after syncing GN, WE is on GN.
added record to WE on GN.
synced GN.
Synced TP.
new record in WE is present on TP.

Changed test record on TP and synced TP, then synced GN, tested OK.

Givens:
One PC, one login, 2 devices.

Questions:
1- Why do I have to manually change the ip address in Manage Android Users when I want to synchronize?
I have already set each device to a static IP, the account should know what the ip address is to that account.
This needs to be changed in code.

2- Since the actual shared file in TP is not in the PC folder for GN I assume that the share flag on pdb WE in TP causes it to be copied to GN but also causes it not to be copied to the PC folder of GN when GN is synced?

3- Not wanting to experiment, what does the Create New Shared Database get used for? Besides the obviousness of its name.
Why would I use it instead of how I did the WE share?

4- Is there a better way of syncing data between 2 or more devices using the same pdb?

1. The conduit remembers the last used address and presents it regardless of the device. It would be beneficial to have it display the last used address per device, so this is something we will consider. The action of having to check the address will have to remain even if we add support for this due to the IP changing occasionally when a static IP is not assigned.

2. Since the file is shared to GN, the conduit knows now to place the file in the main sync directory for GN.

3. The option allows you to select a database for sharing that is not already on a device.

4. Not at this time.
