Feature Request: Field Explanation

How about giving administrators the ability to explain what a field means or how to use it? For example, suppose you have a Sales Tax field. In properties, if there was a Field Explanation section, admin could enter something like "Enter value as a decimal. For example, for a sales tax of 8.25%, enter 0.0825."

Maybe the explanation could be accessed by users in the record view by touching the field name?

Thanks for posting.

This is an interesting idea and something we will give consideration to.

In the meantime, you may want to experiment with adding a custom label to a custom form that includes an explanation, or adding a second form with an explanation and then a button to jump to this form for more information. This would have to be set up for each explanation you wanted, but would allow for what you are wanting.

Indeed on some forms I've designed, I put a small ? or i with a circle around it as a picture button and then jumped to a form that had help for that field. What you're proposing would certainly make the design process easier for you and others, but it requires a format change to the database to hold that info, so it's unlikely we'd see it as a small feature update. Hopefully the above will get you what you need right now!

Although less elegant than the ones described above, here's a decent solution without using forms:
1. Create a new DB, called Help, using the existing one as a template.
2. Change all visible field types to Text or Note.
3. Create a single record in the new database, with field explanations for each visible field.
4. Create a view in the original DB that jumps to the Help DB, and vice versa.

I'm having fun with the Forms add-on, though :)
