backing up Encrypted database

Postby sasanders » Wed Oct 02, 2013 4:28 am

I have a database on my iPhone with an encrypted field.
I would like to backup this database to my Macintosh and actually show the data in the encrypted field.

On my iPhone, I've tried changing my Encryption Mode to disable and I've touched the Decrypt All Records button.

But when I back up the database to my Mac and open it, the data in the encrypted field does not show.

What am I missing?
Is there an article that walks me through this?

Hi there,

Thanks for your post. It sounds from the steps you outlined that you are doing this right. If the data is indeed not set to encrypt and not encrypted on the device, it should be shown on the desktop. So perhaps the setting did not stick or the file didn't get updated when you synced or backed up the database. Please answer a few questions for me:

1. On your iPhone does the program ask for an encryption password when you launch that database?

2. How are you backing up the file from the Mac? Using Desktop Connect or Conduit? Emailing it?

Let me know!

I am NOT prompted for a password after I change the Encryption Mode to Disable.

So I open it. Disable Encryption, touch Decrypt All Records, then touch the Back button twice, then I notice that the encrypted field shows an X in the list view and when I go to specific record I get the lock icon.

When I sync I use HanDBase Desktop 4, go to the Devices menu and then choose Sync.

Something I'm noticing.... when I touch the button that says "Decrypt All Records"... it doesn't seem like anything happens. Other than the button color state changing, I get no other feedback that it has done anything.

Hi there,

Since you have changed the Decryption mode to "Disable" before pressing the Decrypt all records, it probably is doing nothing. Try this instead:

Set back to encryption enabled - whatever mode you had it before. Then press Decrypt All Records. Then back out and verify that the records were decrypted. If they were, then you can go and then disable encryption and it will probably be fine.

Let me know how you make out!

ok, I tried that.... hit Decrypt All Records and then I Disable Encryption on this Database. Back, Back. Close DB, then reopen. No prompting for password and all my data shows up without blanks or lock icons.

BUT, when I sync and the open the DB with HanDBase Desktop 4, the encrypted field is still blank.

OK, that's progress anyway- can you send me the sync log from that last sync so I can see what was going on? You can copy and paste it in your reply here!

Please try this:

1. Use the Finder file manager on your Mac go to to /Documents/HanDBase/iPhone4S/
2. Find the copy of the database in question
3. Move it to your computer's Desktop
4. Sync HanDBase on your iPhone with HanDBase Plus on your Mac

This should force the copy of the database on the iPhone to copy over to the Mac. Afterwards you should have no problem seeing the field.

Please let me know if this does not work.

Thank you, that worked!
I now have an unencrypted database on my laptop and I have re-encrypted the one on my iPhone.
