Images in HanDbase

Postby daveh » Sat Apr 07, 2018 8:18 am

I have created a dB for my cactus plants and would like to have images of the plant and flowers. At the moment I can only display 1image in each image field. Is there a way that I can have more than 1 image per field or will I have to create multiple image fields
Thank you

Hi there,

Thanks for writing. Each field can only do one image- of course you can have multiple fields for them to get additional ones.

Thanks for that. However, is there a way that I can link to a separate pool of images so I don't have to setup multiple fields which seems a bit messy to me. I have seen another app which allows multiple images in a field so just wondering if I could do something similar by maybe having a linked database?

Can you point me to any tutorials/videos if this is possible please?

Many thanks

Hi again,

I think the best way you can do this is to create a database which has just the image field (external field) and the text field for the file name. Now from another database, you create an image field, and instead of a text field for the file name, use a DB Popup field and point it to the file name of the first database above. Now you can tap the dropdown in your second database and be shown a list of images. Tapping any one of them will select the file name and copy it back to the second database.

This sort of creates an image picker of photos you want to include.

If you want to create groups of images you can expand on this as well. For example, let's say your first database above holds up to three images (so three text fields, and three external image fields). Now in your second database, you create three image fields as well and three db popups. Set the group number to the same non-zero value (eg, 1 and point each to one of the file names in the first database. Now when you select the dropdown for any one db popup you will be able to select a record and have all three of those values be brought back over, defining up to three images in your second database!

Hopefully this makes sense- there aren't any tutorials for this sort of thing, but hopefully this will get you started.

FYI, I created the following after figuring it out on my iPod Touch and didn't want to forget the process. It may help...
Jan 4, 2013

start by setting up your database:
Fields ------
1. Add a text field called "imageData"
2. Add an external field called "image"
3. Configure the external field to use the photo picker, and to reference the "imageData"
text field.
4. Save your changes
-----------------------

Form........
1. Picture control
When you are creating a form, there is a control type called the Picture control.
Add that control to the screen and size accordingly.

2. Then
set the data source to be the field where you're storing the file name for your
picture/external field. This is typically some text field.
and...
(Image File Source = Field Value)
There is also an option to scale the image to fit the box you create, so set that or don't
depending on your needs. I like Scale to fit, but then you have to make the size of the
box right for the image.

This should show the image in the form itself. Hope this does the trick!

3. Then, to be able to add or change a picture, add a button,
Data Source = Image - external
Action = Follow Link.

Thanks very much for the information. I will try this and hopefully get to include my images. Will report back, but it might take a while...
