Making sense of where databases are backed up and shared

Postby nefserrano@gmail.com » Wed Jun 16, 2010 8:34 am

I have an issue where my iPad is syncing to my Mac desktop but several databases do not show in the HanDbase folder in its folder. My guess is that some of the databases are shared databases, which I store online, not on the desktop. So, the issue is how to simplify things as much as possible and also make sure I have backups. At present I don't seem to have backups of the online files since I am not using the original iPhone that originally created the shared databases, and when I sync the iPad, as I said, it does not make backups of those files in its folder. I have some databases syncing on the desktop and some online. I can't seem to figure out how to work the edit sync screen so that either all the databases are on the desktop or all of them are online (idisk folder). Nor can I seem to figure out how to make sure there are backups. Any ideas? (BTW, my guess is that this has happened since I have changed devices and storage locations multiple times.)

Hi Neftali,

Hope you're doing well. The Shared databases should still be backed up to the user's backup folder. Though the main database file is not going to be synced to it's Home\Documents\HanDBase folder and instead synced to the shared location, the backups should still be happening to the Home\Documents\HanDBase\Backups folder. Let me know if you are not seeing them there!

Regarding the sync settings screen, each database can be configured individually. That said, there is a default setting that you can set each database to use. By default, a new database you set up is going to use those default settings unless you go and change them.

My suggestion to you is to go through and check each of the settings of those databases and also take a look for the backups folder I mentioned above. Let me know how you fare!

Dave:

I am doing well and enjoying the iPad version. Nice to see the Mac version coming along well also.

The crazy thing about this sync issue is that all the databases are not being backed up to the user home folder. The shared databases that exist on an online server (idisk) are being modified but are not also in the user home folder as I expected from previous experience. Not sure what is up with this.

The other issue that I'm still unclear about is how to successfully move files and still have them sync. Ideally I would like to move all of these files online, which I figure means "sharing" them from those locations, correct? I am just concerned that if i do that that it will mess with the files in the user folder or stop the backups from occurring as has happened.

One solution would be to simply start over - but I am actually not clear as to how to go about doing this. Could you suggest a method that would not result in HanDBase simply restoring my files to the same locations replicating the same issues?

and, here is a screenshot of the file structure in both the shared location and the home folder. Note that strange things have occurred such as: the ADHD file is being modifed in the shared location but those backups are not being modified, same, for example, with the Mood file (though this one doesn't even show up as every having been synced in the home folder backup). And some files, such as the Well Child Check file are being synced in the home folder but not in the shared location (despite appearing as shared files in the edit screen window. I've tried deleting files and "unsharing" them, but apparently you have made HandBase very persistent in protecting data because it never seems to work. :)

Re: Making sense of where databases are backed up and shared

Postby dhaupert » Thu Jun 17, 2010 10:51 am

Thanks for posting the details. It sure seems like this is how your databases are set up- at some point you hit the + button in the Edit Sync Settings and pointed specifically to a folder on your mapped drive. That location would seem to indicate this as well as the log. I'm still unsure why you wouldn't be seeing backups and will have to look into that.

However, try highlighting the shared database in the Edit Sync Settings screen, and pressing the - key next to the original + key you pressed to set that up. It will prompt you to confirm, make sure you hit delete and not dismiss (I say that because the first two times I just tried it, I kept hitting dismiss!). That should wipe the shared settings and then on the next sync it should sync back to the standard folder.

Give it a try and let me know!
