Question: I'm having problems converting my Databases with the HanDBase Data Exchange, what could be wrong?
Product: HanDBase Data ExchangeArticle Number: 137Creation Date: 07/24/2001
Answer:

There are numerous reasons why you may be having converting a database using the HanDBase Data Exchange. Article 138 in our Knowledgebase discusses the Levels of ODBC that HanDBase requires/supports.

In most cases you will NOT be able to convert an Existing HanDBase database to an existing DB in your ODBC source. In most cases you will need to map columns in order for this to work correctly. Depending on the field types this may not work either and you may need to convert on way first and then use that converted file instead. (Please Note: we are working on making it possible to Map field types that normally could not be by ODBC.)

We have noticed that there are many variables with the applications as well. For example your version of Access 2000 may be different than your colleague's version. In this Microsoft release periodic maintenance updates for their products. In this particular case we have found that if you keep your Operating System up to date with these updates and your version of MS Office up to date you will encounter less problems. The easiest way to get these updates is to use the Windows Update option on your Start menu, if present. This most likely applies to any application that you are using, especially in terms of the ODBC driver.

Also, specific to Microsoft products, the MDAC and JET components seem to be a very important part of the ODBC support in Microsoft products when exchanging data. If you are using Windows 2000 or Windows XP you should have all the ODBC Drivers you need. However you may need to make sure you have all updates for your operating system by visiting
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/.
You can then download and install MDAC 2.7 or higher. The latest version that we have tested with is 2.7 and does appear to work withut problems.

If you are using another version of Windows though it may NOT include the necessary ODBC Drivers, as indicated in this Knowledgebase Article from Microsoft:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q271908.
If you are NOT using Windows 2000 or XP we recommend you read that article for instructions on getting the correct and up to date files before downloading and installing anything. Basically, you will NOT want to download MDAC 2.6 or higher. You can find more info about MDAC and where to download it from this page on Microsoft's website
http://www.microsoft.com/data/.

On the above mentioned page is also a link to a Component Checker that can check the version of MDAC you have and diagnose issues. Here is the direct link to information on this. http://www.microsoft.com/data/download.htm#CCinfo
