Answer: Here is what is most likely happening:
- In HanDBase 2.x you could successfully set up a link/linked
relationship even if the second half (the linked field) was not
properly pointing back to the link field in the master database.
Everything would work with one exception- you could not tap on a
linked field and see the matching record in the master database. But
as most people did not require or need that feature it would have not
been noticed by 95% of the people using that feature.
- As of HanDBase v3.x it is _imperative_ that the Linked field be
properly set to point back to the Link field of the master database.
This is because of changes we made to HanDBase to make the new
multi-user structure possible even with related tables.
- To see if your database is OK, try the following in your 2.75
database in the 2.75 version of HanDBase:
- 1. Open the master database properties.
- 2. Edit the Link field.
- 3. Make a note of the following values:
- a - Other Database Name
- b - Other field #
- c - Also make a note of the field number of this link field
itself as it is stated in the title bar.
- 4. Now close that database and open the child database. Make sure
the name matches exactly that which is referenced by the Link field
in step #3a above.
- 5. Open the Linked field that belongs to that parent database.
- 6. Now you need to check the following:
- - Note the field number of this Linked field. It should match
the Other Field # noted in Step 3 above.
- - Note the Other Field # mentioned here. This absolutely needs
to reference the Link field's field number as noted in 3c above.
Most likely this is not set up properly and hence the link
relationships are not being updated properly for 4.0.
If these steps do reveal a problem in the setup, please correct the
setup while in 2.7x of HanDBase and then try to convert the
databases again in the new version of HanDBase. They should now convert the
databases and keep the relationships intact.
If you no longer have access to the 2.75 version of HanDBase then there won't be any way for you to test and correct this. You will either have to re-link all of your Linked records in HanDBase 4.x or you can consider switching to using the Relationship field, if the value displayed in the Linked field is completely unique.
