Newbie help to view PC files on device

Postby Alleyoop » Wed Sep 30, 2009 9:49 pm

Hi, I've been using ListPro for my lists & databases on a Samsung Blackjack, & it worked well for me. I've changed phones, now have a Nokia E71. I've tried a couple of list type programs with little success & I'm now thinking HanDBase is the way to go. I just need to familiarize. :? Before I register, I wanted to see on my device the lists I've created on my PC. One is a simple list, the other a database I imported from a large csv file. They're both saved pdb documents, but when I transfer them, my device says 'unable to open file, file type not supported'. I couldn't see any information on how to transfer files back & forth. In HanDBase, how do I navigate to a file to open a document in the program? At the moment the only documents I can open are the stock pre-created lists, Movie JukeBox etc.
Any help appreciated. :)

You indicate that they are both saved PDB documents. Illium Software, who wrote ListPro has been around as long as DDH Software and I'm guessing they do the same thing we do with their data files, the PDB files. They probably started on Palm as well and when they moved to the other platforms they just continued using PDB files. The issue is that there is no standard format to PDB files. PDB files are the filetype created by Palm, when they first started out, to hold data for applications on the Palm devices. But each developer can define the structure of their particular PDB files. Due to that one application's PDB files cannot be read by another application.

Considering the above, if you have transferred the PDB files that were used with ListPro to the E71 and are trying to open them in HanDBase you won't be able to. You will need to use ListPro's Windows Desktop software to export that data to .CSV files, which you can then import into the HanDBase Desktop to create HanDBase databases. Once you've done that you can specify the field types for the data. You will then be able to install those files onto your E71 so that you can open them in the HanDBase program there.

At this time we do not have any sort of conduit to automatically sync the data from your computer to the device. The Documentation, available on your computer from the Start Menu under All Programs--HanDBase 4--Documentation--S60, has information on the different ways to get the databases from your computer to the device. Ultimately they need to be in one of 4 locations for the HanDBase program to see them. At this time there is no way to browse the device to open files that way. Also, at this time, you can't launch the files directly from the File Manager on the device. Those locations are:
C:\Data\HanDBase\
C:\Data\Briefcase\HanDBase\
E:\HanDBase\
E:\Briefcase\HanDBase\
Putting the HanDBase PDB Database files in any of those folders will have them show up in HanDBase so you can open them there.

I hope this information helps. Let us know if you have any other questions.

Thank you for the helpful reply. Bottom line, once the files were copied to the location you gave me they opened up fine.
Both the test files were created in HanDBase on PC & the database file came from an Excel spreadsheet to a CSV file, (actually from an Appleworks to Windows Excel to CSV) before it went to ListPro.
So I'll apply myself to familiarising with the program (in my spare time). It certainly seems to be more feature laden than some of the S60 utilities I've tried for various tasks. Learning about something new like this presents a choice between, 1, creating the various lists I need & learning about the program's attributes & overcoming the obstacles I encounter as I go, or 2, follow the tutorials & learn about some features I may not need, but in the process have a more thorough understanding of how the program works & have my eyes opened to new & different ways of doing things  .
Thanks again.
