Network drive/images and forms

Postby Treanot » Mon Apr 18, 2016 11:25 am

After doing the research on the forum I'm still not sure of a solution or if this question was asked.
My question is can multiple computers on a network view the handbase files with the form and images?
I came up with this old answer
"
Great question- let's assume you have three desktops that all want to share the databases. One may consider sharing a drive (mapping a network drive, DropBox, Google Drive, etc) among the computers and just letting each user access the same file. But often that's not a good solution, especially if edits are being made simultaneously.
"
This is pretty much standard. I have my main database saved on computer 1, c drive. All the images are also saved on Computer 1. Using default saves. Mine look like user/power user/my documents /handbase. Two folders are created within handbase ; iPhone (my iOS device name) and Images. Images contains all the pictures while iPhone holds all my databases and forms. This is simple and standard

Computer 2 is running handbase desktop remotely. I can see it on my network and I am able to open the database with the form. Everything is great. EXCEPT no images.

Am I missing something?? Something about pathing? Maybe.
I do have a work around but I rather not do it. I can copy the images from
computer 1 and put them computer 2 in the handbase folder within Images it will "view them".

Basically I gather my data and sync to computer 1, that is located in my office, but I would like the ability to view the database out of the office and in the shop on a desktop.

Is there any easier way to view my images on a remote computer without the need to copy the image locally.

Thanks.

Assuming you map the drive on your local computer to your remote computer, back the path out to "...\Documents\HanDBase\" that is mapped. This will allow the subfolder "...\Images\" to also be included.

I guess I don't understand. Has anyone had this work?.
I'm using windows 7. Maybe this only works at time of creation?

Following the suggestion. I created a map of the handbase directory on the local computer but I can not access that new Drive on my remote computer. I used the "map network drive" option after selecting Computer. After it is created It does not give me the option to share it. I'm guessing since its a network drive you cannot view remotely a network accessing drive. , Maybe it needed a new partition. I have my external hard drive already shared and my User folder shared.

I also created a network drive on my remote computer accessing the local directory. I called that z drive. In the Terminal (command promt) on the remote computer I can access and view the z: drive (handbase main folder) all its sub folders. It shows up when I open computer as a network location.
I then open handbase desktop on my remote computer. File open. Up one level until computer. Selecting network location (my z: drive). Opening the database.
Form pops up with information.
Still no image.

Scratching my head.
Suggestions please.

Just did a little deeper checking and you are right, the images won't display on the form. It seems that it internally HanDBase is always looking at the local folder for ...\Documents\HanDBase\Images\, not the one relative to the folder you are in.

For the time being you will have to copy the images to the remote computer and place them in the local folder of ...\Documents\HanDBase\Images\

I can confirm the images path. See my post about how I was able to redirect base folder EXCEPT the images folder
