Field Type DB Popup Not Working on Mac Desktop

Postby MidCoast Jim » Fri Jun 25, 2021 12:50 pm

Hello All -

I have a feeling that people were just waiting for me to re-appear here when I hit this new wall.

I now have my troubled "Journal" PDB syncing from iPhone to MacBook Air M1, back and forth ...beautiful. However, the two DB Popup fields do not work on the desktop. The little "Dropdown Arrow/Triangle" is there but there is no dropdown -- apparently no link to the other PDBs.

I searched around and found some old posts about this problem ...that the function was not yet coded. There were also references to the mysterious "Wine" desktop ...I think I downloaded it while purchasing the two Mac Desktops versions last week. I think there was mention of a PDF.

Is there an already prepared explanation of where I am and what my options are? Can someone point me toward it?

I am not freaking out because 98% of the record creation and editing I do in my "Journal" is done on the iPhone.

Hope everyone's safe and happy! TGIF Jim

Hey Jim,

Your assumption is correct- the relational field types (Link/Linked/DB Popup/Relationship ) were not coded for yet in the Mac Desktop. I always hoped to add it and at one point started reading about how iPad code would eventually be portable to the Mac so I was hoping to create a new version of the Mac Desktop from the iPad version. While they did come out with that capability it was not as simple as I had hoped and the way HanDBase UI is written (programmatically) meant it wasn't a direct transfer. Of course M1 macs can now run iPad applications so the possibility is finally here for those with the latest Macs!

You do have access to the Wine version of HanDBase, if you are not using an M1 mac- it's a version of the Windows HanDBase Desktop that runs on non M1 based Macs. Should be available to download on your registered users page.

Other than that, doing the work on the iOS devices is your best bet!

Thanks Dave --

Not sure you were aware but I had no idea that the "Wine" Mac Desktop would not run on one of the new Mac with the M1 chip. My MacBook does have the new chip ...it probably would have been quite some time before I determined or was told why I was having so much trouble making the Wine work.

So, I have installed my HDB iPad version on my MacBook. I'm attaching a screenshot of my Launchpad showing all three of the HDB installs sitting side by side.

Okay, I am unsure what advantage I will gain if I fun the iPad HDB 2 on the MacBook vs the Mac Desktop version. How should I handle syncing? It has been probably six or so years since I "shared" PDBs amongst my iPhone, iPad and a Windows PC. Over time my workflow simplified and I just synced from iPhone to PC.

I will greatly appreciate suggestions and warnings!! Jim

WINE is a translation program that takes Windows x86 code and translates it into x86 macOS code. With the M1 chip, WINE does not work because it isn't translating into ARM code which the M1 Macs run.

I did some research, and there is a WINE version that is 'working', but I didn't see where it was out for production code yet.

Running the iPad version on the M1 Mac does give you a more robust way of working with HanDBase, but you will still need the Mac Desktop program to sync between the iPhone and the iPad version running on the Mac.

You will need to share the databases between the versions. I did put instructions on your other thread on where it was and how to set it up, the only difference is to share between the two.

When I got my M1 Macbook Air, I did test syncing between the HanDBase Desktop for Mac and the iPad version running on the M1. It synced without any special tricks from what I remember.
Have a good day

Sorry Curt, but I can't find those instructions with the link to the new Wine. Can you point me to the discussion?
I might need the instructions and the link. I hope you keep us updated on the wine version in the future. I would love to have a more robust version to use on the Mac when I have to buy a new laptop.

I think I have been a little confusing.

When during the research (google search), I found a webpage where they claimed that their version of WINE was working on M1 Macs, but it was more of a proof of concept than actual production code.

Here was a site that I just found again
https://www.macrumors.com/2020/11/18/ru ... are-on-m1/

here is the site of the company
https://www.codeweavers.com/crossover

Now I had NOT tried their software to run Windows HanDBase under the Mac. The current version allows the Windows Program to work through the Rosetta translator to run, which is not optimum. How long it will run under the Rosetta translator would be a concern. Apple said that they would have the translator up for at least the 2 year transition period, but how much longer past that is anyone's guess.

the instructions I posted in his other post were how to use the share database in order to modify the sync settings for a particular database. Those were the only instructions I was talking about. I had not played with the WINE version of the Windows HanDBase Desktop.

Sorry if I confused anyone. That was not my intention and I had to post quickly because my wife had an appointment we had to leave for.
