Moving to iPod Touch

Discussion of the version of HanDBase that runs on the iPhone and iPod touch devices. This includes the synchronization conduits as well.

Moving to iPod Touch

Postby grputnam » Tue Jun 02, 2009 10:11 am

I am presently using a Palm E2 and have used it for many years. I am going to move to an iPod Touch. I have been reading the postings about what to get. I am finding that I need some elementary information. I believe I need to buy a new application for HanDBase from the Apple store. I can’t find anything on the Apple website about HanDBase or DDH. I also believe I need to buy the HanDBase Desktop so I can move my data from the iPod Touch to my PC through a direct connection. I need to buy this from Apple also but I have not been able to find it. Is this the basic stuff I need to get started with the new iPod Touch?
Thanks,
Gordon

Hi,

Thanks for your interest. I moved your post to the iPod touch related topics since it was under a different platform. Hope you don't mind!

The way it works with HanDBase for iPhone is that we can't sell the iPhone app itself. We can sell the desktop components, but not the actual HanDBase iPod touch client. The only legal method of installation of an application on an iPod touch is through Apple's App Store. This is a store that has an icon on the iPod touch itself, as well as section within the iTunes store section on your desktop iTunes. To find HanDBase, you can search for HanDBase in either mechanisms, or a direct link to it is here:

http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/stat?id=Ov*nI4o*BuI&offerid=146261&type=3&subid=0&tmpid=1826&RD_PARM1=http%253A%252F%252Fitunes.apple.com%252FWebObjects%252FMZStore.woa%252Fwa%252FviewSoftware%253Fid%253D293419668%2526mt%253D8%2526uo%253D6%2526partnerId%253D30&u1=hdbiphone

The above link will only work if you have iTunes installed on your desktop.

Now the other half of the equation is the HanDBase desktop add-ons. These are available from our site. This link:

http://www.ddhsoftware.com/iPhone

Has links along the left side to the windows and Mac desktop add-ons. Depending on what desktop platform you are using, there are different options. I hope this gets you started, and please don't hesitate to follow up with any questions!

I moved to an iPod Touch 2G from various Palm OS devices (T3, SONY Clie SJ33, etc.) where I had been using HanDBase for years. Dave wonderfully set this up so that you can just buy the HDB app from the iTunes store and, with a simple to set up wifi network, transfer documents back and forth from your laptop/desktop to the i-device (albeit one at a time). No extra purchase necessary.

Now, an even better approach is to spring for the HanDBase Plus for iPhone Add-on. It's only $10 (well $9.99) as an upgrade from a Palm HDB version-- a great deal! It's main claim to fame is that it can sync all the databases at once. It's also incredibly easy to use. It is, in fact, the cleanest synching operation of any iPhone, iPod Touch app I know (I'm using several apps that have their own conduits). It reminds of the simplicity of the old Hot Sync operation (well, save that one has to type in a web address for this set up). It's also incredibly fast.

So, as a happy end user, I think you'll be really pleased making the switch to the iPod Touch 2G. Just be aware that Apple's built-in PIM apps are not the greatest... you'll want to get Appigo's To-do app and just live with the limits of the IPT's Calendar app. I would encourage you to wait a while before buying an IPT as Apple could be announcing something later today or later in the summer. (New models often show up for the fall season.)

What are the chances of an Ipod Touch getting a camera? I think a camera in the ipod touch would be amazing, and I wanted to know if anyone thinks it could happen? I know there are rumors about an ipod touch 2g in september anyone think it may have a camera in it? I know the iphone has one but, i dont want the iphone, i prefer to stay with verizon.

Interestingly, that is the current rumor for the iPod touch. That the new models will ship with a camera on them similar to that on the 3GS (ie, can do video and 3.2MP stills). Here is a link to some articles that attest to this rumor:

These seems like a no brainer to me!

I agree that moving to the touch is a great idea. I got my kids iPod touches for Christmas. It is amazing what these can do. It is like getting several tools in one package.
