WiFi sync won't work anymore on the 7.1.1 Android & I had a problem awhile back with 7.0. USB sync doesn't work anymore at all since Android dropped mass storage option and that was clear back with 4.1. And he still doesn't offer sync via cloud.
It's beginning to look like it's time to find an alternative, which is an absolute shame since HB looks to be the absolute best smartphone database program out there.
Dave still actively works on HanDBase, but there are several items to remember
- Dave has a full-time job - Dave had to get a full-time job to support his family when HanDBase was no longer bringing in enough money.
- Dave does have a family - Sometimes things happen in a family, and you need to be there for them.
- Dave is the only developer of HanDBase - Which also means that he is the only one to support multiple platforms/devices/technologies.
- Dave doesn't have a huge lab of devices to troubleshoot on.
So it gets a lot harder to keep up maintenance with the three major platforms (Windows, Android, Apple) with the time constraints that he has.
Cloud sync - You can use the cloud now for syncing across multiple devices. With Android, you can use a file manager to copy the database file up to the cloud from one device, then from the other, you can use the open in command from the cloud. Not quite as easy as pushing a button to sync, but there is really no way to just push a button and have the cloud manage the sync. There is also a worry about data integrity during a sync. If you initiate a sync while in the car, there is a real possibility that you may drop your connection for a moment, and that can introduce data corruption, which would be catastrophic in many cases.
Yes, you can look for another mobile database program, but HanDBase is the most mature one out there. Some of the others might have features that HanDBase doesn't have, but HanDBase has many features that the others do not have. Some HanDBase features no longer work (sync to Access comes to mind), but that is something someone else working for Dave years ago did, and now that Access has changed their API multiple times, it just doesn't work anymore. To me, that feature was nice while it worked, but I have moved on from Access and no longer miss the feature. If you find something else that you are happier with, I wish you well.
I have been a HanDBase customer/user since the late 1990's when I got my first Palm device. I have databases that have gone from Palm to Windows Mobile, to Android, to Apple with no loss in data for each platform. Not many mobile database programs out there can move data between platforms because they use different database engines. Dave rolled his own database engine/files many years ago, and it has been solid.
Bottom line is that Dave does still work on HanDBase, he has not abandoned it, and he still tries to devote time to it. He just can't put as much time into it was he once did.
